The fin of Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) CHICOUTIMI is visible from the cargo deck of the EIDE TRANSPORTER, a semi-submersible self-propelled transport vessel within the Gare Loch near Faslane, Scotland.
The Department of National Defence awarded the contract to EIDE Marine of Norway for the sealift of HMCS CHICOUTIMI to Halifax. The sealift, a proven method for transporting warships and submarines, begins by having the transport vessel’s deck submerged and positioned beneath the submarine before being raised and secured for transport. The sealift commenced January 7th 2005.
HMCS CHICOUTIMI and its Canadian crew of 57 departed Faslane, Scotland, on October 4 2004 en route to Halifax, Nova Scotia, when a fire occurred Oct 5, in an electrical panel, leaving the Canadian Sub powerless and without propulsion off the northwest coast of Ireland.
HMCS CHICOUTIMI was the last of four diesel electric submarines purchased for Canada’s Navy and was accepted formally by the Canadian Forces from the British Ministry of Defence at an official ceremony held in Faslane Oct 2 2004.
